Haruki Murakami has wisely left small, but noticeable, seams in every one of his work quite well before hand. Such seams that would be ready to appear or reappear in new stories or novels of the future, such as Pinball 1973 that has a link with The Twins and the Sunken Continent , or a short story version of The Wind-up Bird And Tuesday's Women that would later become The Wind-up Bird Chronicle.

After reading his older stories, we tend to ponder upon the stories we are reading and find a thread that links such stories to other ones that he wrote in later years. It looks as if he had everything set and planned long beforehand. The Twins and the Sunken Continent seems to be the farewell stage where Boku, or “I”--the protagonist who appeared in Hear the Wind Sings, Pinball 1973 and A Wild Sheep Chase—reappeared for the last time before Murakami decided that it’s time to give this character a decent name and proper identity.
